Welcome to the CNY 'Feats of Clay' website.

What is Feats of Clay?

Central New York's 'Feats of Clay' was established in 1987 as a means to foster education of the ceramic arts for Syracuse area high schools. Feats of Clay has grown to include schools from Watertown and the north country to Binghamton and the southern tier as well.
In addition to the high school competition, Feats of Clay has grown to now include a juried high school student exhibition that recognizes students that demonstrate excellence in the area of ceramics.

Feats of Clay student exhibition:

This year the juried, ceramics only exhibition begins with an opening reception for the students and their families. It is held at the Ann Felton Multicultural Center Gallery on the campus of Onondaga Community College.
The date for this years reception is
Thursday, April 23rd from 5:00 - 7:00 pm. A silent auction of teacher ceramic donations and 'Feats of Clay' tee shirts will be available. A raffle of professional work will be held at 6 pm on the night of the opening reception.  Raffle tickets are $1 each and are available at each of the participating schools. The donations and T-shirt sales help fund the annual $600 in student awards and prizes.

Hours of the gallery are 11am-4pm and the show will be on display from Monday April 20th - Friday, May 1st.
Awards for the student exhibition include:

  • New* Feats of clay Award of Excellence in honor of Peter Valenti - $100

Feats of Clay Competition:

On Friday, May 1st, over 25 participating schools will converge behind (2019 New Location) the SRC Arena in Lot #12 on the OCC campus to compete in the 'Feats of Clay Olympics.' The events include the 'Cylinder Stack,' 'Mug Production,' 'No Hands Throw,' 'Blindfold Throw,' 'Pot Put,' and the 'Highest Coiling.' These events have been student favorites for years. Teamwork and sportsmanship are imperative and the school that wins the days events are presented with the trophy by the previous years winners. They will house the trophy for the year and add something significant to it.

The event is hosted by Clayscapes Pottery and is currently in its 16th year at Onondaga Community College (2004).
'Feats of Clay' is supported by
Onondaga Community College, Clayscapes Pottery, The Independent Potters Association.
